All candidates must have an identified mentor who should make the nomination. Applications will be reviewed expeditiously by the program admissions committee. Depending on the initial pool of applicants we may accept additional candidates after this point; therefore, we encourage nomination of outstanding candidates throughout the 2010-2011 academic year. Candidates will be selected mainly on the basis of prior research accomplishments and academic promise. We particularly seek qualified candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; and individuals from economically, socially, culturally, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. In keeping with the program's goals, preference will be given to applicants who are trained in psychiatry, neurology, or psychology, although we also seek outstanding applicants with other backgrounds. The program consists of two years of training, including the research training with the mentor, participation in a Neurobehavioral Phenotyping course, the Neurogenetics Affinity Group seminar series, and seminars in the ethical conduct of research. Participants will receive one year of funding from the training grant; acceptance is contingent upon the mentor committing to fund the candidate for the second year of the program. All participants will be required to submit at least one grant proposal during the first year in the program. Under exceptional circumstances the program executive committee may provide funding for a second year.
Positions available for a start date each year between July 1st and June 30th.
•1. Complete CV
2. One page personal statement indicating you are interested in this training program, why you have chosen to work with a particular mentor, and the research plan to be carried out in the mentor's research group
3. Letter of nomination from the mentor. This letter should indicate that the mentor is prepared to fund the second year of the candidate's program and that the mentor and candidate will participate in the program activities as require.
4. Two additional letters of recommendation.
5. The application may include as appendices up to 3 published or submitted manuscripts, as well as any grant proposals written by the candidate.

Predoctoral AND Postdoctoral Trainees Trainee Citizenship: The individual to be trained must be a citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. Noncitizen nationals are people, who, although not citizens of the United States, owe permanent allegiance to the United States. They generally are people born in outlying possessions of the United States (e.g., American Samoa and Swains Island). Individuals who have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence must have a currently valid Permanent Resident Card (USCIS Form I-551) or other legal verification of such status. For example, if an individual has the proper validation on his/her passport, a notarized photocopy of the passport could suffice. Because there is a 6-month limitation on this validation, it is the grantee’s responsibility to follow up and ensure that the individual received the I-551 prior to the 6-month expiration date. Pre-doctoral fellows can have up to 3 years and post-doctoral fellows up to 2 years of consecutive support provided approval of a yearly progress report. End of May

Post-doctoral fellows will have received a Ph.D. or a professional doctorate in a medically-related field and will be pursuing laboratory or clinical research with a mentor in some aspect of stem cell biology or medicine. Clinical fellows will have received a professional doctorate in a medically-related field and will be pursuing stem cell research training either in a laboratory or in the clinic. Clinical fellows will normally be at the fellowship or post-fellowship level of training. March

Currently 9 Predoc and 7 Postdoc Trainees
You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. For our dual degree trainees (DSTP), we prefer dental students that have at least begun or completed their second year of dental school.
The February before the grant start date, which is July 1, so that we may include the names of all incoming trainees in our annual progress report. That report is generally due in March or April.
•Materials are requested in a variety of formats. We ask for original or notarized copies of transcripts and GRE scores. Letters of recommendation preferred hard copy, mailed directly to the training grant coordinator but we will accept electronic copies as well. The trainees are asked to provide, electronically, a self-statement, a career development plan, a research plan, a brief biography from their mentor(s), and biosketches from themselves and their mentor(s). Trainees are provided with an electronic template to prepare this biosketch.
