Faculty Guide to Mentoring & Supervising UCLA Postdocs

The Faculty Guide to Mentoring & Supervising UCLA Postdocs

This guide was developed in collaboration with the Division of Graduate Education, and has been reviewed by faculty, postdoc administrators, and Labor Relations.

The guide is designed to help faculty navigate both best practices as postdoctoral research mentors and the policy and contract requirements of being a manager of postdoc staff. This is a living document and will be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect changing policies, procedures, contracts, and laws. Eventually, this document will be made available campus-wide, but is being first released to faculty in the biosciences. If you have suggestions for improvements or corrections to the guide, an email link for submitting feedback is included in the guide document.

This resource is intended for UCLA faculty who have or will have postdoctoral scholars who they mentor and should only be utilized by this population.

  • For department or lab administrators and fund managers, please use the “Postdoctoral Scholar Management Guide” on Go.Grad for more information on administrative procedures and policies.
  • This document is not meant for postdocs. If you would like to share a resource with Postdoctoral mentees please share the “New Postdoctoral Scholar Checklist”.
